Hey, Pug Pals,
This morning, as I was eating my blueberries and cereal, I received a call from Doris regarding an abandoned pug in Methuen. A very
nice group of three friends had found a fawn, female pug hiding under some bushes last night, and took her in for the night prior to
calling Pug Rescue this morning.
She had no collar or tags, and they said they had never seen her before.
I live in town and the people lived just about 3 miles from my house, so I was happy to go and pick her up.
When I first saw the little female, I was dismayed to see how unbelievably thin and shaky she was on her feet...and even more so
when I noticed her enormous belly. All I could think was that she was pregnant and starving. (She is probably 50% underweight.) She
is maybe 2 years old, and smells horrible.
Her ears are covered with filth and crust, her nails are long and curling, her feet are covered with sores and bare patches of skin. She
also seems to have a patella issue with one leg, but that's the least of her worries today.
However, her face is beautiful and her kisses are full of affection.
I thanked Troy and Brenda and Jill for contacting PRoNE, and immediately left for Carr Island Animal Hospital in Newburyport to have
her checked. Unfortunately, my pal and favorite vet, Elizabeth Hennessy, was not on duty this morning, but her associate, Dr Ann
Craig, met us at the door and began tests and an IV on the spot. Within a short time, blood-work and x-rays confirmed some kind of
gastric-intestinal blockage and infection, as well as anemia, severe malnutrition and dehydration. She had also been vomiting, so
medication was administered to stop that. Ticks crawling on her fur were disposed of.
Dr. Craig felt that immediate surgery was needed, and we discussed our options because Dr. Craig is not a surgeon, but because
Elizabeth has been a good friend for nearly 20 years, and the vet I know best and trust most, we placed a call to her and she agreed to
come in on her weekend off to take care of this poor little girl in distress. The staff at the hospital prepped "Rescue #33-South" and we
waited for Elizabeth to arrive.
Luckily, it was not a long wait, and Elizabeth immediately readied herself and began the procedure.
Let me just say, that I have worked in the medical and law enforcement fields for the past 30 years of my life, as well as having done
bull terrier rescue for 17 years, and I have never seen anything as disgusting and as heartbreaking as this morning.
Obviously, someone tossed this beautiful fawn pug out like trash. And, this feisty little thing, in order to survive, has been eating wood,
pine cones, crumbled sheet-rock, nutshells, rubber, bones and whatever else she could swallow, in order to fill her tummy.
Unfortunately, she blocked the passageway to her intestines with all that debris, and everything was staying in her stomach,
distending it to abnormal proportions.
I won't give you the details, however, let's just say that stomach tissue can
S-T-R-E-T-C-H..........and undigested sheet rock does not smell nice.
We also found that she was an intact female, and Elizabeth took advantage of the moment and corrected that. She woke up not long
after all her stitching was done, and was quite alert.
Because the hospital was not staffed this weekend, I brought '#33' home with me, to administer IV fluids and medications, and to take
some time to fatten her up, give her a bubble bath in a few days, and spoil her rotten.
I decided on the way home to call her "Bleu" since I was eating blueberries when Doris called, I heard the song "Blue" by Leann
Rhimes on the way to AND back from the hospital, and all the staff members were wearing blue scrubs today. Besides, "Bleu" is so
much sweeter than "#33".
"Bleu" is not quite out of the woods yet. The next 72 hours are very important. She is extremely underweight and dehydrated....please,
please, keep your fingers crossed and send "Bleu" your best thoughts.
Jacquie (and Mooshi and Pudge who ask, "WHAT IS THAT SMELL???)

Saturday, July 12, 2008 - right around midnight
Six hours after surgery, I am pleased to report that Miss Bleu is wide awake and very interested in everything going on here.
Mooshi and Pudge have given her a thorough sniffing, and look absolutely repulsed by her odor (umm, Pudge, don't be too
judgmental; you've had your moments.....)
however, Bleu found them to be quite to her liking and wagged and wiggled up a storm!
We're going to give her the IV around 9 pm, and then tuck her in for the night....hopefully, after breakfast in the morning, she will feel like
a new puglet!

Hey Gang,
Miss Bleu had a wonderful sleep, and woke up today alert and bouncy!
She is showing no signs of discomfort or fever, and she is so waggy she nearly falls over!
I attached a somewhat awkwardly angled picture which I took standing over her, just so you can all see how terribly thin she is. She
has quite a bit of recovery in her near future, but I think she'll make it.
Bleu will have her first meal this morning after her IV, and then a little sponge bath

I just took Bleu outside for a potty run, which she did, and then she went and curled up in the grass...like she planned to stay outside
all night, on the ground, in the dark..... please, please, please don't tell me someone made her sleep outside...or, is she just used to
curling up in the grass from her recent life spent outside?? How sad.... sofas and comforters and warm cereal and someone's lap
must be such a treat....

In this photo, I think Bleu is thinking that if she doesn't look at Mooshi,
Mooshi can't see her getting closer and closer.....haaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I think she's a little confused tonight...Wayne left on a business trip this morning, and she keeps running down the hallway and
peeking in doorways ..I think she's trying to find him.

Happy Tuesday! Guess who isn't housebroken??????? Eeek! We'll be working on that....haaaa
Bleu is so sweet...she loves her pillow, her blanket, her little bone....and Pudge. I know I said it before, but she can't take her eyes off
him. She is following him everywhere, and while he can't see her, he can certainly smell her---he will take a few steps, stop, look
behind himself and sniff. HAAAAAA

Bleu continues to do well. She is eating everything I give her...and loving it! We didn't have any accidents in the house yesterday,
however, the crate is an issue. It's pretty clear our girl did some serious time in a crate and that is where she learned to go whenever
she had to go. And, living in wet and dirty blankets may be the secret to some of the issues on her skin and feet. I can tell by
observing how she sits where her pressure sores have come from, and why her hips appear misaligned. She'll figure out clean and
dry is better. Bleu has almost mastered going up and down stairs, too!
Pudge is the light of her life. She has decided that she needs to be with him, on him, by him, on top of him---you name it, Pudge is
THE man!
