Adoption Applicant Reference Checking Form

Here is the list of questions that you should ask the reference. Below you can provide a brief summary of each of the reference checks.

• How long have you known the applicant?
• In what capacity do you know the applicant?
• Are you aware they have applied to Adopt through our rescue?
• Do you believe they have the love, patience, time and financial ability to offer a rescue?
• Have you spent time with them in their home?
• Do you feel their space is clean, safe and secure for a rescue animal to thrive?
• If they work outside the home, what is the length of their normal workday?
• Do you know how they handle long absences away from home?
• Do they have a person to come in and assist with walking and bathroom breaks?
• Do they frequently travel for work or vacations?
• How do you believe they do or will handle these absences?
• If they have other pets, are their pets well cared for, well behaved and do you feel they can welcome another animal into their space?
• Would you leave your pet with the applicant in this space?
• If they have children at home, are they of sufficient age and behavior to handle an animal?
• Have you observed the children around the animals?
• Do they engage in safe and respectful play and understand boundaries around food and toys?
